When she was just five years old, Wren was ripped from her family during a raid and taken captive by the Chief of Boer. When he returned to his home the chief gave Wren to his daughter Ingrid as her personal slave and companion. Over the years Wren has settled into her life and gives Ingrid her complete loyalty when Ingrid becomes the Earl, secretly hoping that Ingrid will free her from slavery. But with the real threat of attacks from the Earl of Forsa, the leader of a neighboring tribe, and the impending arrival of Jarl Knud who is intent on marriage to unite their tribes against Forsa, it is clear that freeing Wren is the last thing on Earl Ingrid’s mind. Wren doesn’t trust the Danes and worries that once Ingrid marries her new husband will never free her. But despite her initial dislike of Knud, she can’t deny the attraction she feels and knows that as a thrall, she could never be anything more than a lover to him, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting to explore the passion simmering between them.

Knud is tempted by the lovely and feisty Wren, but she stirs feelings that he doesn’t want to feel. His people have suffered enough thanks to his emotions and it is important that he doesn’t fail them again. He doesn’t want to hurt Wren, but he can’t risk falling in love with her, so he will marry Ingrid to protect both tribes from the Earl of Forsa and protect his heart from breaking. But a surprising twist will change everything, and with Wren’s life hanging in the balance, he will finally accept that he is in love with her, but is it too late?

This was a great read, well-written and nicely paced, albeit heavy on angst. Wren has suffered, but she is a kind soul and loyal to a fault, even after incredible betrayal. Knud has also suffered although in a completely different way, and he wears his pain like armor. He feels such guilt over his past actions and is willing to sacrifice his happiness to try and make up for his past mistakes. This story is filled with a lot of emotion; a lot of sorrow, pain, and angst, so it is not a light read, but neither is it depressing or dark. There will be many things keeping our lovers apart, but ultimately, love will win the day and Knud and Wren will find their HEA! This book is loosely connected to the previous book and those characters play a role in this story, but it can easily be read as a standalone title. I liked this story, but it was a bit heavier than I had anticipated, so be warned, this is not a light, fluffy read, but I would recommend it.

Her Unforgettable Knight (Protectors of the Crown, #3)Her Unforgettable Knight by Melissa Oliver

Series: Protectors of the Crown, #3

Release Date: May 23, 2023

After two years, Knight Savaric Fitz Leonard never thought he would see Marguerite Studdal, the woman who has haunted him since he walked away from her, letting her believe that he was not interested in her, which was far from the truth. As a biracial man, he has often been the object of bigotry and prejudice, so despite his attraction to her, he believes by pushing her away, he is protecting her from the abuse his heritage will cause her. But now she is here and to add insult to injury, she saves him when he was attacked as he was going to return to where he had seen her last to save her. He is floored to learn that she is in service to Hubert de Burgh, the man Savaric and his fellow Knights of Fortitude have sworn fealty to. He is even more dismayed to learn that his fellow knights knew she was working for Hubert and kept the knowledge from him. Now to protect the Crown from the threat of the Duo Dracones, they will have to work together, will he be able to walk away again?

After Savaric left her, Marguerite made a deal with Hubert de Burgh, she will work for him to bring down the Duo Dracones and in exchange, he will posthumously absolve father’s name as a traitor to the crown and return his title and confiscated lands to her brother. She is not the same woman that Savaric walked away from, she is no longer the innocent, timid lady he knew, after two years working undercover in Paris she is a cunning, dangerous agent who can take care of herself. And while she is still attracted to him, she won’t make the same mistake of trusting him with her heart again. Working together, they begin to unravel the mystery of Duo Dracones and grow closer as they do. Will they finally give in to their feelings or will the past repeat itself?

This was such a wonderful book, it is well-written, perfectly paced, and filled with intrigue. I loved this story, I was impressed by Marguerite and felt a lot of compassion for Savaric – it was very easy to get invested in and root for their journey to HEA. The story is filled with secrets, evil sects, wonderful secondary characters, cameos from previous characters, lots of sexual tension, and finally a HEA that didn’t seem possible. This is the third and final book in the series and while the author gives enough backstory to read this book as a standalone, do yourself a favor and read the series in order – believe me, it will make the ending so much more satisfying!
