Tracy’s Review:

The Highlander's Unexpected Bride (Lovers and Highlanders, 2)The Highlander’s Unexpected Bride by Nicole Locke

Tracy’s rating: 4 of 5 stars

Series: Lovers and Highlanders, #2

Release Date: September 26, 2023

Beileag of Clan Graham has secrets, one of those being a crush she has harbored for Hamilton, a warrior in the clan. Beileag is tall, lovely, quiet, and unassuming, yet she has never had a suitor and believes the problem lies with her. She longs to be seen and have a family of her own, hopefully with Hamilton, but when he asks her for help in wooing her friend Murdag, she has to face the fact that her love is unrequited.

Hamilton has secrets too, the biggest being that in an attempt to push his twin, Camron, into finally going after the woman he loves, has convinced him that while they were drunk, Camron made a bet with him that he would marry his love Anna before Hamilton married and that he would do it by summer’s end. To that end, Hamilton has set his sights on Anna’s sister, Murdag. He hopes the bet kills two birds with one stone, first that Camron and Anna will be happy and second that he will have his own family and hopefully that will ease the restlessness he has been feeling. But when his attempts to woo Murdag come to naught, he seeks out their friend Beileag for help. He soon realizes he has been wooing the wrong woman, but has no idea how to win Beileag without exposing his lies.

This story runs concurrently with the first book and clears up any questions that might have lingered from that book. This story is filled with bets, lies, miscommunication, insecurity, misconceptions, a bit of heartache, retribution, friends, lovers, secrets, steamyish love scenes, revelations, and finally a happy ending, complete with an epilogue. This is the second book in the series and I would recommend reading the books in order.

A Deadly Vow by Carla Simpson

A Deadly Vow (Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Murder Mystery Book 5)Barbara’s rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Series: Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Mystery #5
Publication Date: 10/10/23
Period: Victorian Edinburgh
Number of Pages: 276

This was an exciting, breath-holding adventure from the first page to the last. We’ve known since the first book that Angus Brodie was born in Edinburgh and lived on the streets surviving any way he could. This story brings us from London back to Edinburgh in search of a murderer – except the murder happened thirty years ago – and the victim was Brodie’s mother. Oh! My!

Needless to say, the murderer doesn’t wish to be caught and goes full-out to stop Brodie, Mikaela, and Brodie’s friend Munro. This murderer has a lot to lose and enough power to stop our sleuths in their tracks – or does he? He certainly goes full-out trying. He’s certainly not averse to murdering again – after all, he’s good at it. With more murders, kidnappings, and arson, you can see how exciting every page is. You’ll hold your breath as Brodie is attacked – then Mikaela – and . . .

I loved that we learned so much more about Brodie in this book. With the life he led, you can only marvel that he escaped and made himself into the man he is. I also loved that Brodie finally made his feelings for Mikaela known – but – she didn’t actually reciprocate – though we know she feels the same. Sadly, the book ended about two, maybe three, paragraphs too soon for me! This sly author ended the book at just the right spot to ensure we come back for more in the next book. Of course, I would have been back anyway.

This book has an exciting, hold-your-breath, mystery, a toe-curling romance, and characters you wish to meet in real life. I love that Mikaela is strong, intelligent, determined, and can take care of herself, yet she is learning to see and show that softer side of herself. This is most definitely a recommended read and I hope you’ll love it as much as I did. Happy Reading!
