Series: The King’s Knights, #3

Release Date: August 23, 2022

When Johanna, the widowed Baroness of Brae, came upon a massive man lying unconscious on the road, she can’t just leave him to die, despite being warned to do so by her steward, who noticed a trap on the road, which most likely caused the man’s current predicament. But Johanna points out that he likely saved them from the same fate and insists on taking him back to Brae Castle to tend him. And hopefully, with any luck, she will convince him to stay on and help protect the castle.

Sir Alewyn “Al” Monceaux wakes and doesn’t know where he is or how he got there. He remembers leaving Windsor Castle on a mission for the King’s Knights, but has no recollection of the accident and is missing his horse and all his belongings, including his sword. But as luck would have it, he has ended up exactly where he was meant to be, Brae Castle where he was to investigate reports that Lady Johanna is aiding the French against the king and to arrest her for treason if he finds proof of these claims.

He wonders how he will convince Johanna to let him stay, but that problem is solved when a neighboring baron arrives unannounced and Johanna says Al is her betrothed. He plays along with the ruse, because it will give him time to investigate, but as he gets to know Johanna, he can’t believe that she is a traitor to England. He is even more sure that she is innocent when he meets another of her neighboring barons. But can he trust her with the truth of his mission? And the even bigger question is, will he be able to leave her once the traitor is caught?

I loved this story, it is definitely my favorite of the series (so far) and a book that I am thrilled to recommend. Johanna and Alewyn are remarkable characters who both battle with insecurity and strive to prove their worth to others. I adored how they worked together and supported and encouraged each other. I was hoping for a bit more steam in this book, but in the end, I didn’t miss it and when their story ended, I had no doubts about their mutual desire and love for each other. This is the third book in the series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone title with no problems.

Tracy’s Review:

The Lost Laird from Her PastThe Lost Laird from Her Past by Jeanine Englert

Tracy’s rating: 4 of 5 stars

Series: Stewart Siblings, #2

Release Date: June 28, 2022

Once upon a time Garrick MacLean, Laird of Westmoreland, and Brenna Stewart were in love and while no formal agreement had been made, it was no secret that they hoped to one day marry. But all that changed when Garrick got the news that his sister Ayleen was in danger and he rushed off to save her.

Brenna stayed true to Garrick even though a year had passed with no word from him. But things in the highlands were changing and the English king was coming down hard on the clans, fearing for his family, Brenna’s father, Bran Stewart made a deal with an Englishman named Stephen Winters. A deal that included marriage to Brenna. With all hope of a reunion with Garrick gone, Brenna decides to agree to her father’s arranged marriage, thinking that if she can’t have her true love, at least she will be helping her clan and pleasing her father.

After the loss of his sister, a death that Garrick blames on himself, he feels unworthy of his title of Laird and unable to marry Brenna, fearing he will fail to protect her as he did his sister. He purposely waited to return, hoping she would have believed him dead and married another. But it is clear fate has other plans for him, because, on his way to his home, he finds a carriage wreck, and inside is none other than his lost love, Brenna. He rescues her from the carriage, just before it goes over a cliff. He tends her wounds and plans to take her to his home, but learns that while he was away, his family was killed and his lands seized. He is even more sure he is unworthy of love. But when it becomes clear that the attack was not a simple robbery – someone is trying to kill Brenna, he will do anything to keep her safe, even though she can never be his.

This was a well-written, fast-moving story, but it was a bit of an angsty read. The book is filled with lots of action, some loss, heartache, angst, a bit of intrigue, a well-done “whodunit” complete with a satisfying villain comeuppance, and finally a hard-earned HEA. The book was good, but I did find Garrick a bit tiresome, I felt that his guilt dragged on too long and I was also annoyed that he stayed away hoping she would be married when he returned, yet when he finds out she is betrothed, he is upset that she didn’t wait for him. Overall, it was a good read and one I would recommend.
