Series: Lairds of the Isles, #3

Release Date: May 23, 2023

Eilidh MacDonald and Maximilian “Max” Wood meet and share an attraction in London, but Eilidh knows nothing can come of it as she will be returning to Scotland just as soon as her brother Angus meets with Viscount Burtenshaw and convinces him to sell the Scottish estate of Lidistrome to him. Add to that, the fact that Eilidh has been burned once and is wary of her feelings, and Max isn’t exactly the type of man she hopes to marry, as he has no purpose and leads a carefree life of a man about town. But everything changes when things don’t go as planned regarding the estate and when Max’s sister Isabella is forced into an arranged marriage to a vile man, leading Angus to step in, things get interesting! And the story shifts to Scotland and the impending wedding of Angus and Isabella.

Max has been drifting through life with no sense of purpose, his brother has refused to support Max’s desire for an occupation. With Max being financially dependent on Freddy, his self-esteem has taken a beating, especially when he sees himself through Eilidh’s eyes. When his great-aunt passes and leaves him an unexpected fortune, Max is finally in control of his destiny – Will he make himself into the man he believes Eilidh deserves or will he give into his self-doubt and let the only woman he has ever considered marrying get away while he continues with his meaningless life in London?

This was a well-written and surprisingly emotional story. I enjoyed getting to know Eilidh and Max better, especially after sensing their attraction in the previous book. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect in this story, but it certainly wasn’t what happened! This story was filled with emotion, guilt, some heartache, very mild low-heat love scenes, surprising twists, even more surprising revelations, character growth, cameos from previous characters, and finally a very sweet HEA complete with an epilogue. I did think the first half of the book was repetitive, as it ran parallel to the previous book and was the same story, but told from Max and Eilidh’s POVs, but once they got to Scotland, the story picks up and Max began to shine. This is the third and final book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title with no problem at all. I enjoyed this story and happily recommend this title to my fellow Regency lovers.

When Augustus Henry John “Jack” Beresford, the Earl of Hawkenden learned that his younger brother Thomas married a woman he had known for only a month, he was furious and convinced that his brother had been trapped by Miss Eleanor “Nell” Godwin and decides to confront her and demand she leave his brother. But the woman he confronts is not his new sister-in-law, no, it is her best friend Lady Cecily Thornhill, the daughter of the late Earl of Kingswood and ward of the current earl.

Misunderstanding Jack’s purpose, Cecily is appalled by his demands and tells him in no uncertain terms that she will not be complying with his decrees. She doesn’t mention the details of the conversation, but the misunderstanding is pretty quickly worked out after the brothers argue and each refuses to change their plans to visit the earl’s hunting lodge.

Slowly Jack begins to accept that Tom does love Nell, and he feels lost since Tom was the last person Jack felt a bond with and he now thinks that is gone. His experience with love has left him jaded and cynical and as the house party continues and he gets to know Cecily, he has to fight the feelings she is invoking, because he knows love only leads to pain. But when a tragedy leads to a life accounting, he realizes that love is worth the possibility of pain, but will he be able to make amends?

This was a good story, although a little bland, and the author changed her writing style, this book definitely had more of an “Austen” feel than her previous works, and in my opinion, it was not an improvement. I thought the book was interesting and I thought the author did a very good job of believably changing Jack’s POV, she added a bit of humor, heartache, misunderstanding, a stubborn hero, kissing only love scenes, and finally, a HEA that neatly tied up everything. This is a standalone title, but if you are familiar with this author’s backlist, you will recognize Cecily from The Earl’s Runaway Governess.
